History
In 1862, Don Ramon Cuervo, from Asturias, established his first jewelry store in Havana, the business grew and Don Ramon was joined by his nephews, giving rise to the name Cuervo y Sobrinos (nephews in english) in 1882. The store moved several times, expanding each time, and in 1920 the owners opened branches in Pforzheim, Germany, for stone sourcing, and one in Paris for jewelry trading.
In 1928, Cuervo y Sobrinos opened a watch factory in La Chaux de Fonds. Thus, from the beginning of the 20th century, Cuervo y Sobrinos produced its own models of watches with a Latin and timeless design... and was also the only importer in Cuba of major Swiss brands such as Patek Philippe (note that the Esplendidos of CyS is a case identical to the Patek Philippe of the time!), Rolex, Longines, Omega, Juvenia, Ulysse Nardin...
In the 1950s, during Cuba's golden age and when Havana was the most luxurious city in the Caribbean, the boutique and the brand attracted celebrities such as Caruso, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Clark Gable, Ernest Hemingway,
Pablo Neruda...
When Castro took power, the independence of the store was over and it was nationalized! Until 1965, the brand still produced
some military watches for the Cuban army. Between 1965 and 1996, the company did not produce any more, forced to mothball. The brand was bought back in 1997, relaunched in 2001, exhibited in Basel for the first time in 2002 and has since developed its inspired collections, rich in its Latino heritage! Finally taken over in 2018 by a pool of investors, Massimo Rossi took over as president.
The brand celebrated the 1519 founding of Havana by Christopher Columbus by presenting some memorable limited series, and its original creations delight lovers of different and acidulous watchmaking... Each watch is delivered - Havana obliges - in a cigar box made of precious wood.
Cuervo y Sobrinos was a precursor in its time! It is one of the few watch and jewelry stores that decided to create its own watch brand in addition to distributing existing watch brands. This is also the concept adopted by Michel Fréret-Roy today in his Parisian boutique where he offers independent watch brands and also his own watch brand! This shows the common spirit that unites the two names, Cuervo y Sobrinos and Fréret-Roy!
To celebrate this communion of spirit, Fréret-Roy is undoubtedly one of the boutiques with the widest choice of Cuervo y Sobrinos watches in Paris. For every purchase of a Cuervo y Sobrinos watch, we will offer you a gift on behalf of the brand.
A wide range of the collection available in the boutique is presented below, but you can also order any model that would not be available at Fréret-Roy during your visit. Do not hesitate to contact us...

Gran Premio de Cuba
This "automotive" chronograph refers to the historic Cuban Grand Prix 1957 car race!
In the same spirit, Cuervo y Sobrinos is associated with the "Historic Endurance" race, which revives the passion for "old-fashioned" motor racing!
Cuervo y Sobrinos has looked back to 1957, a time when Cuba hosted the action-packed Cuban Grand Prix. The Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957” is a new chronograph, limited to 162 pieces, inspired by the historical race, but crafted for a modern-day audience.
The inaugural Cuban Grand Prix, the Gran Premio de Cuba was held in 1957. The race threaded its way through the grand avenues and vibrant esplanade of Malecón, north of Havana. In 1957, Juan Manuel Fangio, the famous Argentinian driver, secured victory in his Maserati 300S. The following year, on the eve of the race, anti-government revolutionaries kidnapped Fangio, however, the race still went ahead and Stirling Moss was victorious in his Ferrari 335S. Unfortunately, the 1959 race was cancelled due to political instability, however, it returned for one last time in 1960, when the British driver, Stirling Moss, was once again, triumphant, albeit this time in a Maserati Tipo 61.
The exotic backdrop of Havana made the race a fascinating spectacle and, despite the political challenges and the tragic death of several spectators, many motor racing enthusiasts still talk of the race with much affection. Now, Cuervo y Sobrinos honours the Gran Premio de Cuba with a new, limited-edition chronograph bearing the name and date of the legendary race first edition.
Dressed in a vibrant shade of red, the dial evokes thoughts of passion. Indeed, the sight of brightly hued race cars screaming around the circuit, driven close to the edge of their handling limits, must have proved captivating. The cream hours and minute hands are leaf-shaped, luminescent and plump, while their colour bestows the dial with a bygone charm. The central chronograph seconds hand and counter hands are baton shaped. Two chronograph registers, 30 minutes and 12-hours, once again encompass cream hues, while a small seconds display, positioned at 9 o’clock, is presented in a vivid shade of red.
When driving a car in the heat of competition, the dial must impart meaning efficiently. It is for this reason that Cuervo y Sobrinos has chosen to employ fulsome, cream Arabic numerals to intelligibly convey meaning. The hour markers are treated with Super-LumiNova, enhancing readability in dim light.
The red tones of the central dial area are framed with a cream circlet that serves as a telemeter scale. Beyond the telemeter scale is a black ring, hugging the interior of the case which plays host to a tachymeter. This feature allows the wearer to determine the speed of a vehicle over a known distance.
Measuring 42mm in diameter, the Cuervo y Sobrinos Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba is housed in a stainless steel case. The dial sits beneath a double curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Two piston-style chronograph pushers are positioned on the right flank of the case and the lugs are ergonomically-shaped, optimising wearer comfort.
The watch is supplied on a black ‘racing style’ matte leather strap. It features numerous perforations, a detail inspired by the racing gloves of yesteryear. Red stitching and an openworked CyS-branded clasp are two additional refinements. The case back is adorned with a Gran Premio 1957 de Cuba insignia and the model is limited to just 162 pieces. This latter number was inspired by the 162 mile race distance of the Gran Premio 1957 de Cuba.
At the heart of the Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957” sits an automatic Swiss movement, the CyS 8099 calibre. Based on the Valjoux 7753, the movement features an engraved oscillating weight and has a power-reserve of 48 hours.
In releasing the Historiador Gran Premio de Cuba “1957”, Cuervo y Sobrinos celebrates Cuba’s rich and illustrious history. Furthermore, it respects the brand’s heritage while engaging with today’s discerning watch enthusiast and motorsport fan.

Historiador Hemingway
Cuervo y Sobrinos pays tribute to its former client, the famous writer and legend of the 20th century, Ernest Hemingway, who lived in Cuba for more than 20 years, a country he loved.
The two versions offered are limited to 140 pieces each. These new models, dedicated to a great literary figure, are the first Swiss watches officially approved by Hemingway Limited.
The creative team at Cuervo y Sobrinos has selected vintage-inspired shades such as mellow creams and tobacco toned hues, colours that would have been familiar to Ernest Hemingway during his time in Cuba. This new model is officially licenced by Hemingway Limited, an organisation that manages the Ernest Hemingway© trademark, initiated by Ernest’s eldest son, Jack and founded by the three sons, in 1988.
Measuring 40mm in diameter, all versions of this new watch are housed in a stainless steel Historiador case, chosen for its vintage-inspired appearance and ergonomic elongated lugs. To the rear of the watch, the case back is engraved with a Hemingway logo, providing a respectful nod to the legendary American novelist. A colour-coordinating leather strap and CyS-branded clasp securely affix the watch to the wrist.

Buceador Caribe
In Spanish, "buceador" means "diver". It is the perfect name for this new version of our iconic diver watch dedicated to the leasures of the sea and the oceans, to the sea bed... The new Buceador Caribe is a diver's watch inspired by the cyan colors of the Caribbean Sea, the pastel sands and the aquatic environment of the island of Cuba. The construction of its case, extremely complex, container type, contributes to the impressive waterproofness of the model to 200 meters depth. This contemporary watch, with its assertive Caribbean charm, is both practical and elegant and is available in three different versions.
Characteristics common to all Buceador models:
Stainless steel or black DLC treated steel case, diameter 43 mm, thickness 15.8 mm. Anti-reflective sapphire crystal, engraved steel back, water resistant to 20 ATM. An ingenious push-button system, positioned at 4 o'clock, unlocks the crown at 2 o'clock which allows the adjustment of the rotating inner bezel, thus allowing the diver to monitor his diving time. The main crown is positioned at 9 o'clock and is used to set and wind the movement.
The movement comes from the new manufacture of mechanical movements "Fabrique d'Horlogerie Peseux SA" originally born in 1923 and recently reborn. Its caliber Peseux 224 is a classic automatic mechanism, 28 jewels, with 38 hours of power reserve at 28800 a/h.
The sand-colored hour and minute hands and the second hand are very original and treated like the indexes with Super-LumiNova, thus improving the readability of the dial in the dark. Date window at 6 o'clock.

Espléndidos Scott Jacobs
Cuervo y Sobrinos is pleased to unveil the Espléndidos Scott Jacobs. Once again, the luxury brand has joined forces with the celebrated American artist widely known for painting Harley Davidson motorcycles. This new creation, limited to 100 pieces, features a depiction of a 1939 Knucklehead Bobber motorcycle on its dial.
Scott Jacobs, the celebrated American artist, has a passion for vintage motorcycles and is widely known for painting Harley Davidson motorcycles, including the pre-war EL Knucklehead.
The Knucklehead was produced from 1936 – 1947, however, it is the pre-war examples which are the most desirable, coveted by legions of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts. Scott met two such enthusiasts who shared his passion for the iconic American brand, Patrick and Cris Simmons. They owned a 1939 Knucklehead Bobber. While this motorcycle differed from its original factory specification, its vivid blue and yellow paint job, ‘bobbed fenders and knobby tyres’ attracted many admiring glances.
The dial of the Espléndidos Scott Jacobs watch has provided the American artist with a horological canvas for expressing his creativity. Initially, Scott produced an original artwork in full size. Thereafter, this artwork was replicated in miniature form using a special 4-colour laser printing technique. Each eye-popping shade found on the 1939 Knucklehead Bobber is beautifully represented on the watch’s distinctive dial.
