Yvan Arpa, founder of ArtyA,
one of the most avant-garde watch designers of our modern times.
After having made an important contribution to some of the greatest watchmaking successes of recent decades, in 2010 Yvan Arpa launched his own 100% independent brand . Thus was born ArtyA, a condensed version of "Art", "Y" for Yvan and "A" for Arpa.
"Provocative artist", his ArtyA creations leave no one indifferent. We either love or hate it. Hit-or-miss.
The very name of the brand says it all: ArtyA produces works of art individually, unique pieces and very limited series.
No mass production, true luxury is exclusive, limited, intimate, rare, and as far as it is concerned, different...
All handmade dials are made by his wife, the artist Dominique Arpa-Cirpka, who uses unique techniques that she likes to keep secret.
The use of unconventional materials is one of ArtyA's particularities:
For the collection "Son of Earth Butterfly: Butterfly wing dials (under the control of the competent authorities);
For the "Son of Sea" collection: algae-based "marine" dials;
Real bullets from firearms, used in cases and dials;
Various fine and precious stones, tobacco leaves;
Non-circular mechanical gears....
The variety is infinite!
ArtyA timepieces are limited in number, most are unique pieces and some are on display in the most prestigious art museums, such as MoMA in New York.
ArtyA has also designed and developed an automatic movement with an independent watch manufacturer. In addition, Pierre-Laurent Favre, formerly designer of grand complications at Patek Philippe, now works with Yvan Arpa and participates in the design of ArtyA grand complications...

In the realization of the case engraved on grade 5 titanium which is renowned for its exceptional hardness. Its floral motifs are inspired by the rinceaux of historical arms grips. The flying tourbillon is manufactured by ArtyA and its bridges are cut out in arabesques.
The ArtyA Arabesque Tourbillon Black Gold has its case enhanced with gold and copper deposits.
These motifs are already a tour de force for craftsmen. However, it is their very special execution that will attract attention: they are engraved in grade 5 titanium, a material already used in watchmaking for its hardness. Engraving it with motifs is therefore counter-useful for it. It is this approach that seduced Yvan Arpa: "Titanium is sold to us as an absolute, a summit of hardness, resistance to shocks, corrosion, temperature, etc.". In reality, it is just more resistant than the references we have always been taught, like steel. It can be worked to make it an object of art and not a clinical machining. And I prove it.
Inspiration...
The choice of arabesque motifs is very personal to Yvan Arpa. "The idea came to me through a western," he says. "I noticed the chiselled stock of a rifle. The motifs were perfect. I drew them in the same spirit, then validated the model and the approach with Tech Graving, former of the School of Armory of Liege founded in 1897, and world-renowned authority for its expertise in the field", who took over the torch to make it an exceptional piece.
The arabesque motifs of this piece were very difficult to work. The dial is, like the case, hand-engraved by our master engraver. In the end, the result is in keeping with the centuries-old tradition of royal gunsmiths.
The Arabesque Tourbillon Black and stretches over a titanium case measuring 52.5 x 40 mm. It is driven by a hand-wound mechanical calibre from the Swiss manufacture ArtyA, regulated by a flying tourbillon and offering an exceptional three-day (72-hour) power reserve.
The characteristics of the ArtyA Royal Arabesque Tourbillon Black Gold are identical to those of the ArtyA Arabesque Tourbillon Black,
except for the gold decoration on the case.
